East is the New West – Bolstering UK Growth

London’s data center market is evolving, with power constraints and rising demand pushing operators to look beyond traditional locations. East London is emerging as the next key hub, offering power availability, land resources, and strong connectivity infrastructure.

Green Mountain’s LON-East data center is featured in this month’s Data Centre Magazine, with our UK Managing Director UK, Simon Blackburn, on the cover.

In the feature, Simon discusses how London is strengthening its position in Europe’s competitive data center market and why East London is emerging as the next central hub for its expansion. With power constraints in traditional locations and increasing demand from AI and HPC workloads, operators are shifting their focus—East is the new West.

Green Mountain is responding to this shift with a 30MW expansion at LON-East, Romford. The first 14MW phase will be ready in 2025, designed for AI and HPC workloads with power densities of up to 100kW per rack. Sustainability remains a priority, with 100% renewable energy and HVO fuel for backup generators.

The expansion is carefully managed to ensure zero disruption to existing services, with T. Clarke as the General Contractor and Green Mountain’s proven track record in large-scale, rapid builds. As hyperscalers and enterprises move east, LON-East is set to become a key part of London’s growing digital infrastructure.
